What violinists are saying.....

All of Heather's exercises/books on violin technique are wonderful and extremely helpful. Beginners have a starting point and can learn a lot faster and advanced players also have a starting point for refreshing and upgrading their violin playing.

I highly recommend Heather's books/courses to every violinist!

— Zala Hribernik

As a private violin teacher, I started incorporating “Strengthening Exercises for First Position” in the studio curriculum for my middle school-aged students.

Upon implementation, their left hands became much stronger and more balanced between the index and fourth fingers.

With proper implementation, this book shapes a nice left hand. Not only does this book build the necessary strength for the first position, but it is also developing the strength needed for position work and vibrato. It's a great tool. A little bit goes a very long way as well.

This book is great for all levels of players, from beginners who read in first position through professional.

I'm finally playing pieces

I've been a self taught violinist for 15 years. Most of the time I've spent on scales and some shradieck type exercises. Every time I tried to play a piece, it seemed to highlight a weakness in my technique, and back to exercises I went. I've been doing Heather's Strengthen First Position for several weeks, and today opened my Solos for Beginners book. I enjoy playing for the first time. I just easily sight read through several pieces and having fun playing. I highly recommend Heather's exercises and methods.

"Strengthening Exercises for First Position" educates violinists how to excel in first position via six most common first position finger patterns. These exercises are great for the beginner violinist wanting to master first position and the seasoned violinist wanting to discover and heal any intonation inconsistencies.

The book focuses on finger relationships on the same string and across the instrument. This book also focuses on three distinct issues typically neglected in other method books with exercises to implement: importance of holding fingers down, lifting fingers, and the importance of hovering fingers.

"Strengthening Exercises for First Position" is perfect for first position newbies and seasoned first position players wanting to improve intonation. The exercises mindfully practiced at a faster tempo can help more advanced players discover and fix their first position intonation inconsistencies.

There are four exercises for each finger pattern:

Preparatory Exercise - an introduction to the finger pattern on all four strings with half steps marked.
Eliminate Flyaway Fingers - an exercise to encourage hovering fingers allowing for faster more accurate playing.
Marching Fingers - an exercise to be practiced in two ways, holding fingers down and lifting fingers.
Finger Pattern Exercise - an exercise exploring every finger combination possible with the finger patter on one string.

At the beginning of every finger pattern section of Strengthening Exercises for First Position method E-Book is an image of the finger pattern to be studied giving the violinist a visual of the finger pattern for the following exercises.

Each exercise within this book focuses on applying healthy violin playing techniques for that specific finger pattern on that specific string.
