52 Violin Proficiency Exercises

Technical Studies for the Practice Room

A self-guided violin technique course with video instruction and companion workbook

A Place to Return to When Technique Needs Clarity

This course exists for those moments when you know something in your playing isn’t quite settled —

intonation feels unreliable, coordination feels inconsistent, or practice sessions feel unfocused.

52 Violin Proficiency Exercises is a self-guided technical course designed to help you organize your practice, clarify common technical issues, and build greater reliability in your playing over time.

These studies were developed over many years of teaching, in response to the specific technical gaps that repeatedly appeared in students’ playing. Again and again, violinists arrived with strong musical instincts but without clear tools for stabilizing intonation, organizing the bow arm, coordinating the hands, or practicing technical material in a focused and efficient way.

Rather than relying solely on traditional exercise books, these studies were created to address those moments directly — offering focused technical work designed to support clarity, reliability, and long-term development.

This is not material to rush through or “complete.”

It is a structured collection of technical studies you return to as needed — thoughtfully, calmly, and at your own pace.

When You Don't Know Where to Start...

Many violinists can hear what isn’t working, but don’t know how to address it clearly or efficiently.

This course was created to offer a grounded starting point.

Each study focuses on a specific technical area and is designed to help you:

• Identify what needs attention

• Understand how to work with it

• Practice with greater intention and clarity

Rather than guessing what to fix next, you are guided through contained, purposeful work that supports steady progress.

How This Course Supports Your Practice

This course offers:

• A curated collection of 52 focused technical studies

• Clear, concise video instruction to guide each exercise

• A structured, interactive workbook to support your practice

• Flexible, non-linear study you can return to as needed

• Long-term support for technical clarity, coordination, and reliability

You may work with one study for a week, a month, or return to it repeatedly over time.

The course is designed to support understanding, thoughtful repetition, and steady technical growth at your own pace.

How the Studies Are Organized

The 52 studies span a wide range of core violin technique, including:

• Violin hold and physical organization

• Note reading and rhythmic clarity

• Intonation, accuracy, and speed

• Finger coordination and exchanges

• String crossings and bow organization

• Articulation, balance, and shifting preparation

The material progresses in difficulty, but the course is intentionally non-linear.

Many violinists return to specific studies as warm-ups or when similar issues arise in repertoire.

What Violinists Commonly Experience

With consistent, mindful use, violinists often notice:

• Improved intonation accuracy

• Greater coordination and balance

• Increased confidence in reading

• Clearer, more focused practice sessions

• Greater ease when returning to repertoire

This work is not about shortcuts.

It is about creating the conditions where progress can emerge naturally.

Meet the Instructor...

Heather Kaye Broadbent is an international violinist and pedagogue known for her work in foundational technique, tonal development, and long-term violin study.

For more than two decades she has worked closely with violinists of many levels, helping them solve the technical obstacles that quietly limit progress — unstable intonation, unbalanced bow control, inefficient finger coordination, and unclear practice habits.

The studies in this program emerged directly from that teaching experience.

Over years in the studio, certain technical gaps appeared again and again — areas where traditional repertoire and standard exercise books did not always offer enough focused support.

These exercises were created to address those moments directly.

Each study isolates a specific technical element and offers a clear, practical way to rebuild reliability in the practice room.

Heather is the founder of the Broadbent School of Violin Artistry, an online school dedicated to thoughtful technique, musical understanding, and lifelong violin study.

What violinists are saying...

I live in Australia so being able to access Heather’s expertise on the other side of the world has been liberating for me. I have discovered a new love for playing violin through her very precise, thoughtful explanations that have encouraged me to improve playing.

When I have difficult passages to play I look through the Proficiency Exercises to see what can help me improve. One thing I have loved is having Heather’s voice in my head saying ‘Happy Playing’ reminding me of the joy it is to be able to play each day.

— Sally

I came across Heather’s online academy searching for online violin learning resources as I was looking for a comprehensible pursue learning violin. I was instantly intrigued by the 52 violin exercises and went for it after much contemplation. Your weekly exercise program, 52 Violin Proficiency Exercises has truly been an inspiration and blessing to me, a homeschool mother of three. I am currently teaching my oldest son and two other children how to play the violin. I never would have dreamed that to be possible. So, from the bottom of my heart, Thank You!

Heather says, “I easily take violinists to the next level in their violin journey” which is quite some statement to make. But I believe it is 100% true!! These exercises are helping me to achieve the next level in my violin journey.

I’ve started playing the violin a year ago and I have learned so much already because of these exercises. All exercises come with a video in which Heather excellently explains all the details about the exercise and how to get better at playing the violin. Every exercise is a new challenge and if practiced consciously it’s a great help to progress and focus on something different each week. I especially like the study sheets that come with each exercise. The questions in the study sheets guide me to practice better. It feels to me as if  Heather is personally there with me in the practice room telling me what to do. It’s really helpful to be completely focused. I’m confident that I’ll keep learning and enjoying my violin journey with the help of these great exercises.

I found Heather because I had broken my left wrist (needed surgery and the whole thing) and I was so bummed and wanted to get back to playing as soon as possible. I found Heather’s wonderful inspiring video of how she was totally cured after her wrist fracture and I felt much better.

My recovery went very well and I essentially used playing as my PT. I also went to PT and brought in the violin to show the therapist what I needed to do. I was back at rehearsals in about 4 weeks. I am an amateur violinist but love playing. Thank you Heather for your words of inspiration and of course thank you for your wonderful 52 Violin Proficiency Exercises. What a gift!
