Preparing a Violin Piece with Clarity and Musical Intention

Before the Instrument. Before the Practice.

Listening, structure, and musical thinking before practice begins

A different way to begin

Many violinists begin practicing before they truly understand the music.

Notes are learned, fingers are assigned, bowings are tried — yet the piece still feels confusing, tense, or overwhelming.

Progress slows not because of a lack of effort, but because the preparatory work was never clearly taught.

This short course offers a different starting point.

Rather than beginning with repetition, it begins with listening, structure, and musical understanding — the work that allows practice to become focused, calm, and meaningful.

A brief orientation

In this short video, I explain the origin of this course and walk through the thinking behind the preparation process.

The work began as a group workshop on the Bach Sonatas and Partitas, where I developed what I call a piece preparation packet — a clear, repeatable way of approaching new music before the instrument comes into your hands.

This approach is designed to help violinists move past overwhelm, uncertainty, or hesitation when starting a new piece, and instead meet the music with clarity, understanding, and intention.

The process applies equally to solo repertoire, études, chamber music, and orchestral work. It is not about rushing or problem-solving, but about learning how to internalize the music first — so that practice can become focused and grounded.

This video is optional, but it offers helpful context before beginning the course.

What this course is

Preparing a Violin Piece with Clarity and Musical Intention is a focused, self-contained course designed to help violinists approach new repertoire with understanding rather than urgency.

Before technical practice begins, you will be guided through a thoughtful process of:

  • listening with intention
  • observing musical structure
  • understanding rhythm, melody, and harmony
  • forming musical intention

This work happens away from repetition and pressure. It is about learning how to meet a piece of music before attempting to execute it.

What you will learn

This course offers a clear, repeatable approach you can apply to any repertoire — solo, chamber, or orchestral.

You will learn how to:

  • listen to recordings actively rather than passively
  • understand rhythm and meter before playing
  • recognize melodic and harmonic structure
  • reduce anxiety and overwhelm when starting a new piece
  • prepare musically before engaging technical work
  • return to familiar repertoire with fresh clarity

The goal is not speed.

The goal is understanding.

What is included

  • One guided teaching video (approximately 25 minutes)
  • Three printable companion PDFs, designed to live on your music stand as a reference

How this fits within the Broadbent School of Violin Artistry

This course lives in The Musicality Room of the Broadbent School of Violin Artistry.

It is not repertoire-specific.

It does not replace technical study.

Instead, it provides a foundation for thoughtful musical engagement — one that supports all future repertoire work.

Many students find that this approach quietly transforms how they practice, even with music they already know.
