First Position Resource Library
First Position Resource Library
Practice Room · Foundations
The First Position Resource Library is a collection of technical support materials for violinists refining intonation, spatial awareness, and key fluency in first position. These materials are designed to support daily practice and long-term technical calibration, functioning as a reference that can be returned to repeatedly.
This is not a course and not intended to be completed in order.
It is a supporting resource library within the Practice Room of the Broadbent School of Violin Artistry.
What This Library Supports
The materials in this library help violinists develop:
• reliable first-position intonation
• spatial understanding of finger patterns and intervals
• key fluency through scales and arpeggios
• coordination between ear, hand, and notation
• clarity around common first-position pitfalls
• confidence in daily technical work
These resources may be used independently or alongside applied studies and repertoire.
How to Use This Library
Violinists and teachers may draw from this library in several ways:
• select a scale to reinforce a key over multiple days or weeks
• revisit broken thirds for interval clarity and spatial mapping
• use reinforcement etudes to apply pattern work musically
• consult written guidance to understand common technical errors
• assign materials in a studio setting for incremental progress
There is no expectation to “finish” the library. Its purpose is to support clarity and refinement over time.
What’s Inside
This library includes:
Orientation & Technical Notes
Written guidance addressing common first-position challenges and how to avoid them.
Scales & Arpeggios (First Position)
Two-octave major and minor scales, broken thirds, arpeggios, interval studies, and key fluency pages.
Reinforcement Etudes
Simple applied studies for coordination, intonation, and hand organization.
Demonstration Video
A brief first-position scale demonstration for tonal and spatial reference.
Additional materials may be added over time to support continued study.
Who This Library Is For
This resource library is well-suited for:
• adult beginners establishing first position
• returning violinists clarifying foundational gaps
• experienced players recalibrating intonation or hand organization
• teachers seeking structured technical materials for the studio
The level range is intentionally broad.
First position remains relevant throughout a violinist’s life — both as a starting point and a place of return.
Relationship to the Broadbent School
This resource library sits within the Practice Room at the Foundations layer. It complements, but does not replace:
• Strengthening Exercises for First Position (Applied Study)
• first-position scale work in the Practice Room
• repertoire and musicianship training elsewhere in the School
It functions as a technical reference that supports continued study across the School.
